چکیده

The objective of this study was to determine the effect harvesting alfalfa ( Medicago sativa L.) and tall fescue [Schedonorus arundinaceus (Schreb.) Dumort] after frost ensiling mixtures these forages on silage fermentation characteristics, intake, digestibility ruminal by ewe lambs. Forages were harvested in October 2017, wilted, blended as either alone, 67% + 33% novel endophyte-infected fescue, or 100% fescue. Twenty bins lined with 2 plastic bags, packed (n = 5/trt) respective forages, stored for 3 months, then assigned randomly Dorper lambs 20; mean BW 34.7 ± 6.65 kg) offered ad libitum consumption. Lambs allowed 14 d adaptation followed 5 total feces urine collection. Data analyzed using PROC-MIXED SAS orthogonal polynomial contrasts used identify trends associated different proportions alfalfa. Six steers (288.6 +/- 2.1 kg of BW) fitted with rumen and duodenal cannulas were used in a crossover design to evaluate intake, rumen fermentation, and site of nutrient digestion of freshly clipped, endophyte-infected (E+) Kentucky 31 tall fescue with or without soybean hull (SH) supplementation at 0.60% of BW (OM basis). Steers were placed in metabolism units within an environmentally controll...

Rumen fermentation characteristics, nitrogen balance and growth in lambs fed methane digester effluent.

A laboratory silo trial, two lamb metabolism trials and a lamb growth trial were conducted to compare the nitrogen (N) value of swine methane digester effluent (MDE) to that of urea. Using laboratory silos (four/treatment), fermentation characteristics were measured for silages containing cracked corn, ground wheat straw and MDE added at levels of 0, 4, 8 or 12% of silage dry matter (DM). Lacti...

Intake and Digestibility of Improved Selections of Tall Fescue and Orchardgrass Hays

Improved cool-season grass cultivars may add production potential to ruminant enterprises across the North–South transition zone. Quality among hays of ‘MaxQ’ (‘Jesup’ with novel endophyte), HM4 (‘HiMag’ with novel endophyte No. 4) and ‘Cajun’ (without endophyte) tall fescues [Lolium arundinaceum (Schreb.) Darbysh.] and ‘Persist’ orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) was evaluated. Forage was ha...

Effects of yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) supplementation on intake, digestibility, rumen fermentation and milk yield in Nili-Ravi buffaloes

Rumen Yeast® (RY; Saccharomyces cerevisiae), a live yeast strain, improves milk yield and composition and nutrients digestibility through balancing rumen ecosystem and increasing ruminal cellulolytic bacteria numbers in cattle. To examine the effects of dietary supplementation of RY in Nili-Ravi buffaloes, 16 buffaloes with 8 L average daily milk production were randomly divided into two groups...
